In May 2009, after 26 years of a brutal civil war, almost 300,000 Tamils were rounded up like livestock and imprisoned in military run internment camps in Sri Lanka. These men, women and children- citizens of Sri Lanka were detained by the Government of Sri Lanka for no other reason than their ethnicity and denied access to adequate supplies of food, water and healthcare.
Thanks to the stand taken by thousands of Australians who joined our 300,000 Reasons campaign, almost 2500 emails and 1500 postcards were delivered to the inboxes and mailboxes of our Federal MPs including the Prime Minister, The Hon Kevin Rudd MP. As a result of this action and similar campaigns around the world, the Government of Sri Lanka faced significant reprisals from many countries at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Trinidad and Tobago in late 2009.
The international community must keep holding the Government of Sri Lanka to account for its actions and ensure independent investigations into alleged war crimes are thoroughly and impartially investigated.
According to UN estimates, almost 95,000 people remain detained in the camps – denied even the most basic of human rights, freedom of movement. The result from the recent Presidential election provides little hope, that life for Sri Lanka's Tamils will improve. The struggle to ensure that all Sri Lankan's, regardless of ethnicity and religion, will one day enjoy equal rights, freedoms and opportunities continues.
